On one hand spending too much time with friends takes away from valuable study time and makes students more stressed out but, on the other hand its important they have at least some time to just hang out and enjoy their friendships. Students who feel overwhelmed with their schedule can invite some of their good friends to a study group or plan a regular movie night once a week to take a break from their work. 3. Exercise an Time outdoors Getting enough exercise is essential for a teen’s mental well-being. Teens have a lot of energy, and it’s detrimental to sit all day and all afternoon without a break. Some high schoolers will enjoy playing on an organized sports team, but they dont have to make such a large commitment to be healthy. They could join a local gym or play basketball in the driveway after school. They could swim laps at the local pool or take a yoga class. As long as students are getting some exercise and spending time outdoors when the weather is nice, they are maintaining an overall well balanced healthy lifestyle. 4. Academic Support Students should have the academic support they need as they are tackling difficult high school level subjects. This might mean talking to their teacher during their free period to clarify assignments, joining a study group that meets on Saturday afternoons, or hiring a private tutor to come and help them in the comfort of their home. Sort through your current study space to weed out things you do not actually need for the new term. Old textbooks? Try reselling them for some money for this terms textbooks, or shelving them for later use if you think you will need them. Used notebooks? Sort through them to see if they have any information that will help you in later classes or recycle them if you no longer have any use for them. Get rid of old papers and worksheets of past classes, broken pens, or other items you will not be needing. Decluttering your space before the new term with let you start out the term with a clean, organized space. You wont have to sort through old books and papers every time you sit down to do coursework, and a cleaner space makes way for a clearer mind. If treating yourself to new stationery and school supplies helps you feel more excited about doing your schoolwork, do not be afraid to splurge a little to have you a little more mentally prepared for the new term. Fill out your planner Once you have the syllabus for each course you are taking this term, start filling out your planner. Whether its in a planner that you carry with you everywhere or a digital calendar like Google Calendar, its important to fill out a planner of some type so that you are always aware of your time commitments and deadlines throughout the term. Find out a method that works for you. Emphasizing bigger deadlines, or choosing to include your day-to-day commitments. Color coding by class or type of assignment, or using different symbols to highlight different deadlines. What works for one students planner may not work for you, so do not be afraid to design your planner on a trial-and-error basis. Improvisation is key. Make a study plan After you have filled out your planner and look at each syllabus, try making a study plan that you can follow throughout the term. It can be as detailed as you think it needs to be. You can start out with big deadlines to avoid feeling overwhelmed from the get-go. Start listing out your quizzes, midterms, essays, and finals. Work your way down to smaller assignments like discussion posts, reading responses, and readings. You can make separate ones for classes if you would prefer, but its important to remember that the schedule for each class you are taking will continuously impact the other. While one week may look relaxed for one class, it may be packed for another class. Try designing your study plan with all of your classes in mind, one easy week or night for one class may mean that you might spend a little more time on another class that has a ton of work. Making a study plan early on in the term gives you a guide for being productive, and will help make you accountable for school work when you can see what you should be doing when you think theres nothing to do. Remember that the study plan isnt definitive, and you can always adjust it as you see fit. Get a study buddy (or two)   When classes do start, try to make at least one friend in each of your classes that you can call a study buddy. Get their contact information so that you can contact each other for questions. These questions can be as simple as clarifying assignments or sending each other links that you deem helpful for the course. If you are lucky, your study buddy will actually want to study with you outside of class. Getting a study buddy that wants to well in the class just like you do will help encourage you to be productive in the class when someone else can hold you accountable to maintain good studying habits.   Take advantage of the new term to boost productivity and maintain good studying habits until the end. Whether working on organizational skills or self-motivation 8th graders can make their lives a lot easier by refining a few important academic skills before they complete the school year. 1.   Effective study habits Students entering high school will be expected to have pretty decent study habits. They will need to be able to sit down and start homework assignments on their own, take the initiative to ask questions or get help when needed, work effectively within a group, and so on. There are lots of changes going on in middle school and junior high but ninth grade teachers will expect a certain level of commitment from their students so its a good idea to start looking at study habits now and make any necessary adjustments over the summer. 2.   Time management and organization Another thing thats incredibly important for 8th grade students to master is time management and organization. Students might have three hours of studying or homework to complete over the weekend but, if they’re disorganized, it can take forever. So many students dont get things done on time or miss important deadlines because they lack personal time management skills. To be fair, most adults struggle with time management to some degree so its not to say that young students need to be perfect. Rather, they should set a reasonable goal for improvement and work towards it. Students who have at least some organizational skills tend to not only do better academically but also tend to be happier and more relaxed during this major transition (READ: 10 Reasons Why You Need a Summer Tutor). 3.   Becoming a self-starter In the 8th grade teachers will still check up on students on a regular basis and ask if they understand the assignment, if they need any additional help, or if theyre struggling. In contrast, 9th grade teachers will encourage students to be self-starters and take the initiative to ask questions without prompting. If 8th graders have one major goal over the summer it should be to learn how to speak up when they dont understand something. Even if a student is uncomfortable asking a question aloud in class, they should get used to talking to the teacher after class or making an appointment to talk about challenging assignments. 4.   Communication with teachers Another really important factor of mastering the 8th grade is learning how to communicate with teachers. For instance, younger students generally say to a teacher I dont get the assignment or this doesnt make sense. Thats a good start because it lets the teacher know the student is struggling but, by high school, students should be able to specifically describe what it is they’re struggling with. For example, students can ask a question such as I dont understand the concept described on page 23 or I dont understand what specifically sparked (a particular war, revolution, or conflict). Specific questions definitely help the teacher figure out how to explain the difficult passage or concept to the student in detail. 5.   Choosing good role models as friends Another thing essential at this age is for students to start choosing friends based on their attitude and goals towards school and life. Most students stay at one high school for four years, so theyll likely have the same classmates this entire time. However, students moving from 8th to 9th grade will have an opportunity to reinvent themselves and make new friends. Classmates who are serious about getting work done, ask for help when needed, and have a positive attitude about school are more likely to encourage their friends to do well and stay on the right track.
